I can't imagine Michael Stipe setting foot in East St. Louis. Although, it'd be fun to see.
I got that info (including the ESL reference) from R.E.M.: An Unauthorized Biography. Maybe the author wanted Stipe to seem a little more street.
Was there once, stayed at the Hyatt Union Station. Loved the Union Station part.
